Beyond just our own personal passion for world records, we're building URDB because we see an opportunity for a record book that's much more open, democratic and less bureaucratic than what Guinness currently offers.
Consider these quotes from 'Getting Into Guinness', a great new book by Larry Olmstead. The book includes an intensive history of the Guinness Book and world records in general, and parallels Olmstead's personal quest to set his own world records. Writes Olmstead:
“…the book and its staff often show little regard for its most hard-core fans, the record...
The process of setting a world record often involves failure. On some occasions, these failures can be spectacular. In V2 of our site, we're planning to integrate a Failed Attempts section. Think of it as an outtakes area of sorts. It will hopefully include videos that are pathetic, sad and often hilarious.
If you shoot any record attempts that fail miserably, please send them to us. In the meantime, take inspiration from this guy, who fell 65 nautical miles short of rowing across the Pacific Ocean. Pathetic, indeed. Dan
Here at URDB Headquarters, we're continually finding examples of records we think are worthy that Guinness would likely never touch. Corey found this video of a man in Bangladesh successfully carrying 20 bricks on his head. If anyone can help us find him, we'd love to add him to our database. He's a complete legend in our eyes.
